How to Qualify as a Gem Stone
In judging the quality of a cut diamond,
a buyer must take into account the “four C’s”
of diamonds - color, clarity, carat weight, and cut.
Color of Diamond
Colorless stones are the most valuable
of the diamonds. Fancy, colored diamonds, or fancies
exhibit clear, strong colors such as blue, green,
red, and orange. Fancies are quite rare and highly
prized among diamond enthusiasts.
Clarity of Diamond
The presence of internal blemishes and
flaws determines clarity. The clearer the diamond
is graded as, the more valuable it is.
Carat Weight of Diamond
The unit of weight used for diamonds
and other gems is the metric carat (about 0.2 g or
0.007 oz). Another unit used to express the weight
of diamonds is the point, equal to 0.01 carat.
A 5-carat stone is worth more than five
1-carat stones put together, even though they are
of the same quality.
Cut of Diamond
The cut of diamond is the shape and
proportion of the diamond stone produced, as determined
during the diamond-cutting procedure. The better the
skill level of diamond cutter is, the better the cut
produced.
